Dorothy Shain Henderson is the Founder and Creative Director of Dorothy Shain Fine Art & Design. She is a Greenville, South Carolina-based contemporary artist and entrepreneur creating work that celebrates travel, exploration and experiences. Her business specializes in connecting a discerning and high-end clientele, with original arts, prints, textiles, wallpapers and products.

Dorothy Shain Fine Art & Design was founded in 2014 with an
entrepreneurial spirit and soaring ambitions: to utilize her talents to the ends of the earth, while creating a thriving, prolific career as an artist, leading the way for women-owned businesses and leaving behind a legacy for the world to remember.

Backstory

In December of 1989, a wave of creativity swept over a mother-to-be during the final months of her pregnancy. Shortly thereafter, an artist was born. Dorothy’s interest in art was undeniable from the beginning. Her childhood was spent with a paintbrush in hand and a project in motion. Propelled by several art teachers along the way, Dorothy’s skills quickly outgrew her age and her parents looked for other ways to continue to challenge her.

Being diagnosed with A.D.D. at a young age, school never came naturally to Dorothy and she was often labeled as “behind.” It was not until high school that her creative gift began to turn her life around.Dorothy graduated, with honors, from Christ Church Episcopal School in Greenville, South Carolina and was Southern Methodist University bound on an arts scholarship to study painting.

Dorothy spent the next 4 years pursuing her degree at Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas, Texas. During her time there, she had the opportunity to spend 3 months traveling around the world on a program called Semester at Sea, visiting over 13 different countries in 4 months while taking classes, studying art and discovering a newfound passion for travel. This newfound passion led her to run after exciting opportunities for the growth of her creative gift that landed her in Taos, New Mexico and New York City for extended periods of time with the college. Barnaby Fitzgerald, a classically trained artist and her painting instructor, helped Dorothy realize her potential and her gift. With his guidance, her technical oil-painting ability expanded and her vision for the future began to take shape.

In 2014, after several city post-college city moves and jobs, Dorothy landed in Charleston, South Carolina and rented a studio at Redux Contemporary Art Center. That year, Dorothy Shain Fine Art & Design was founded solely based around the sale of original art, passion and big drive.

In 2016, Dorothy moved her operations to Greenville, SC to open new doors and opportunities. She continued to expand her skill set at Penland School of Arts & Crafts and through an artist fellowship at Greenville Center for Creative Arts. Over this time, she introduced additional revenue streams, all of which involved the replication of existing and past artwork. Dorothy Shain Fine Art & Design has direct sales, design capabilities and a network of vendors that provide support to the Company’s needs.
